Former British champion eyes world domination

Tyson Fury is predicting a powerful performance against Martin Rogan on Saturday night as the 6ft 9ins heavyweight looks to make a statement to the world title hoarding Klitschko brothers in Belfast.

The 23 year-old, who relinquished the British and Commonwealth titles in favour of a crack at the Irish belt, also rubbished unified champion Wladimir’s last opponent, along with questioning older brother Vitali’s place in boxing today.

“I’m ready for the Klitschkos and when they see me against Rogan they will be quaking in their boots,” stated Fury at the final presser for his bout with Rogan.

“I’ve changed completely and you will see it against Rogan. I’ve had the right amount of fights and this next fight will put me on the world stage.

“Wladimir’s last opponent Jean-Marc Mormeck was no good, too small. The Klitschkos haven’t fought anyone their own size in years and Tony Thompson will not come to win when he fights Wladimir in July.

“I’m young, ambitious and bigger than the Klitschkos. British boxing fans are in for a real treat because I’m going to take over.

“Dereck Chisora showed us that the Klitschkos are not completely unbeatable. He gave Vitali one hell of a fight and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

“I think the Klitschkos should move on before they beat, especially Vitali. I beat Dereck Chisora a lot more comfortably than Vitali did so I think age is a massive factor for him now.

“Vitali has proved he’s a worthy champion and he can’t achieve any more than he has already. It’s about time he should retire. He has got a family and at 40 getting in with young fellas you can get some damage done. Wladimir will get out in a couple of years as well.”

Fury is 17-0 as a professional and has distanced himself from a match-up against one of the formidable Ukrainian’s in the past to focus on his own development in the boxing ranks.

The Mancunian was dropped in his previous contest against the relatively unknown Neven Pajkic and may need to step up to European level to test himself before a challenge against either Klitschko.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su
