‘The Real McCoy’ opens door for huge domestic bouts

Former world featherweight champion Scott Harrison is to return to the ring in May for a ten-round lightweight bout as the Scot aims to waste no time with four, six or eight rounders on his return.

The 34 year-old, who has signed with Ricky Burns’ promoter Alex Morrison, has stated that his ultimate goal is another world title and will delve straight into the British and European scene according to Morrison.

“Scott will come back as a lightweight and he will do so on my next show, possibly at the Kelvin Hall,” Morrison told The Glasgow Evening Times.

“We had been looking to have the next promotion at The Gorbals, but we will need somewhere bigger.

“I would hope we will have something in place by May and there is a possibility it could be shown live on BoxNation.

“The fight will be a ten-rounder against a good level British or European opposition and if Scott comes through, we would hope to have him challenging for the British title by the end of the year,” he added.

Harrison has now opened up the possibility of a meeting with the winner of Lonsdale belt holder Anthony Crolla and Derry Mathews in two-weeks’ time and with the likes of Gavin Rees, John Murray, Kevin Mitchell and Ricky Burns at the weight, there are an abundance of match-ups to be made in the next 18 months

Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su
