‘Desert Storm’ to remain at welterweight
Juan Manuel Marquez is now a fully-fledged four-weight world
champion as Timothy Bradley decided to vacate the WBO light-welterweight title
in favour of keeping a firm grip on the 147lb version.
The 38 year-old, who will make his first defence the belt on
July 21st, joins an elite band of Mexican fighters to hold world titles in four
or more weight divisions, with Erik Morales and Jorge Arce recently-crowned
members.
The decision means that ‘Desert Storm’ is now keeping
his options open for a huge fight at welterweight, with a rematch with Manny
Pacquiao top of his list but looking more and more unlikely as the week's pass.
Amir Khan has recently emerged as a major contender to oppose
Bradley in his maiden outing as champion in November, although the Briton may
want to have a warm-up fight at the weight before jumping in head first with
the new title holder.
