Future Hall of Famer calls time following defeat
Former undisputed world middleweight champion Ronald ‘Winky’
Wright has thanked fans today after hanging up his gloves following his comeback
defeat to Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin at the Home Depot Center last night.
The 40 year-old, who lost a ten-round decision to the undefeated
fighter, is bowing out with a 51-6-1 record with 25 stoppages and five world
titles in all. His victories over Shane Mosley in 2004 crowned the Florida
fighter as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, but last
night was a step too far following a three-year absence and Wright has now hung
up his gloves.
“It was fun while it lasted. I did what I set out to do and
that was to be great. Part of being a good boxer is knowing when to call it
quits,” Wright announced on his Twitter account today.
“If I can't be the champion again there’s no need to keep
boxing. But I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for always
supporting me and I will still be ringside at all the fights!”
Wright has always been held in high regards and was widely
avoided by some of the bigger names in the sport during the early-to-mid 2000’s.
When given the chance, the southpaw gladly took on the best around and was
never stopped in 21 year-plus career.
