‘Kid Chocolate’ scores sweet victory

Peter Quillin improved his middleweight prospects by doing what he was expected to do and out-scoring an aging Ronald Wright at the Home Depot Center in California tonight.

The New York-based fighter had much the greater hand speed of the two fighters as ‘Winky’ showed obvious signs of ring-rust following a three-year absence from boxing and Quillin took full advantage.

The 28 year-old, who was 26-0 going into the bout, banked three of the opening four rounds on my card before dropped Wright with a whipping right in the fifth, before cruising the remainder of the fight to take a ten-round decision

Judges at ringside gave the bout to Quillin with scores of 98-91(twice) and 97-92 to put ‘Kid Chocolate’ another step closer to a world title shot. Wright at 40 may have to rethink his reasons for returning as another loss on his record may begin to hinder his legacy.

Earlier, Austin Trout defended his WBA light-middleweight belt with a drab points win over a subdued Delvin Rodriguez as the three judges came back with 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 cards.

The 26 year-old was said to be in with a shot at a unification with Saul Alvarez on September 15th if he could impress tonight, but on the showing he gave, looks likely to be overlooked as James Kirkland mulls over a final offer to face the Mexican.
