'Pacman' to take championship back in November
Manny Pacquiao should still be recognised at the WBO
welterweight champion in the five months until his rematch with Timothy Bradley
after suffering one of the worst cases of a wrong decision in the history of
the sport.
The 33 year-old has had a seven-year unbeaten run ended and
his fight record tarnished with another loss through no fault of his own and
did more than enough to fend off Bradley’s challenge on Saturday night, along
with the ensuing return.
I think a full independent inquiry into the scoring of the
contest should be opened immediately by the WBO as the outrage surrounding the
outcome continues on and even has die-hard fans questioning the integrity of boxing as a
result.
I have no doubts that the second fight will take the same pattern
as the first when the pair meet again in the needless rematch this coming
November as Bradley earns another huge pay packet that is largely as undeserved
as his new WBO belt.
The American, 28, could miss out long term though as the
belt he now loans from Pacquiao will be returned to the Filipino in good time, whilst the
WBO light-welterweight title that he did genuinely hold is now set to pass to interim
champion Juan Manuel Marquez.
