Triple gold medallist suffers heart attack
Amateur boxing legend and three-time Olympic heavyweight
gold medallist Teofilo Stevenson died suddenly yesterday after suffering a
heart attack in his native Cuba.
The 60 year-old claimed the biggest prize in the amateur side
of the sport in 1972 in Munich, 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow and was
once reportedly offered five million dollars to turn professional and fight
Muhammad Ali.
Stevenson, who also claimed three world amateur
championships during his glittering career and was widely known as one of the
greatest ever fighters never to compete in the paid ranks, will be sorely
missed.
