Former champion seeks pastures new
The four-year relationship between light-welterweight
fighter Amir Khan and Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has ran its course as
the Briton has admitted that he is seeking a new coach for his next bout.
The 25 year-old has suffered two bad defeats in a row since unifying
the WBA and IBF titles at 140lbs last year and has looked bereft of ideas in
both outings as he fell to defeats against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia
respectively.
The Bolton man has already begun his search for a successor,
with coaches like Enzo Calzaghe and Emanuel Steward said to be interesting in replacing Los Angeles-based Roach for a possible December ring return.
'King' Khan had reportedly been unhappy at the time he got to spend
with Roach, who also splits his time training numerous other world-rated fighters, including Manny
Pacquiao and middleweight king Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
“I’m 25 and not even at my peak yet. I want to make a few
changes and am in talks to change trainers at the moment. I am looking at a few
names but I don’t know if they are available,” Khan told The Daily Star.
The former Olympic silver medallist turned to Roach in 2008 after suffering his first defeat in a bad knockout against Breidis Prescott and became a star name on both sides of the Atlantic under the renowned trainer’s stewardship.
