Boxing legend open to WBO title challenge at 175

Former undisputed pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr. has indicated that a possible WBO light-heavyweight title bout against Nathan Cleverly in the UK would be of interest to him.

The 43 year-old has won his last two bouts at weights of 193 and 183lbs and had been expected to pursue a shot at cruiserweight world champion Krzystof Wlodarczyk after winning his last fight in Poland.

A fight in the UK remains one of the American's ambitions though and Cleverly would be an attractive option as he comes with a version of the world title that Jones so desperately craves.

“I’m still hoping to come to England and perform one time before I retire,” Jones stated according to The South Wales Argus.

“If anybody out there wants to come up to the cruiserweight division and thinks they want some or even if Nathan Cleverly wants me to come to 175lbs and take his belt, I might try that.

“That’s not a bad fight at all. Tell Nathan’s guy to call me and we might make that happen.”

Welshman Cleverly, 25, is currently pencilled in to defend his title at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff against Vyacheslav Uzelkov after months of trying to lure Bernard Hopkins into a trip across the Atlantic.

A bout with Jones would not be possible until at least February due to the timescale involved and the former world heavyweight champion could be seen as an alternative now that Hopkins has ruled himself out.

Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su
