Ringside report: Martinez survives final round beating to secure Chavez victory

Frank Stea

Sergio Martinez 50-2-2 (28KOs) won a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 46-1-1 (32KOs) after a scare in the final round to win the WBC World Middleweight Championship

Both fighters felt each other out in round one. Martinez was busier letting his jab go more often.  10-9 Martinez.

Chavez taunted Martinez in round two as the Argentine champion landed many shots on the gloves of the Mexican. Chavez landed some solid body shots after trapping Martinez on the ropes. Martinez resorted back to moving around the ring utilizing his jab and regained control of the fight.  10-9 Martinez.

Martinez moved and danced around the ring landing jabs and right uppercuts. Chavez had few moments in round three but Martinez’s speed, movement and busier approach had Martinez leading on my scorecard through three. 10-9 Martinez.

A straight left hand by Martinez in the beginning of round four got the attention of Chavez and a right hook that was the best punch of the fight so far.  Chavez had his moments but didn’t faze Martinez one bit. Martinez won a heated exchange to end the round.  10-9 Martinez.

Martinez once again moved around the ring controlling the pace with his jabs and straight lefts. Chavez showed frustration and absolutely no answer for the “Maravilla” gameplan.  10-9 Martinez.

Chavez was able to trap Martinez on the ropes landing some nice shots. Martinez unloaded with combinations midway through the round. Martinez closed out the round more aggressive and wins again on my scorecard.  10-9 Martinez.

Martinez battered and bloodied Chavez in round seven. Chavez put forth no effort and rarely let his hands go in the round. I don’t see this lasting much longer. 10-9 Martinez.

Chavez had his best round in round eight landing some hard clean shots. Martinez seemed to have taken this round off. Chavez wins his first round of the fight on my scorecard. 10-9 Chavez.

Martinez moved around the ring landing quick jabs and straight lefts. Chavez is not being as busy as he needs to at this point of the fight. Martinez lands his jab at will and wins the round.  10-9 Martinez.

Chavez shows no sense of urgency in round ten and continued to be out boxed and severely out punched by Martinez. 10-9 Martinez.

Chavez showed some sign of life in round eleven landing some decent shots. Martinez responded with a more effective assault on his own. Martinez’ left eye is cut from a right hand by Chavez from earlier in the round. 10-9 Martinez.

Chavez desperately needs a knockout going into the final round. Chavez dropped Martinez twice with about a minute left and had the Argentine warrior in loads of trouble. He survived and hung in there for the final bell.  WOW!!!   Who the heck knows how the judges see it. 10-7 Chavez.

Scores were 117-110, 118-109, 118-109 for Martinez

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Phil D. Jay WBN Editor (picure by boxrec.com) After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su

Unbeknown to presenter Logan, it was Welshman Freddie Evans, who also boxes in an Olympic final tomorrow, who suffered the tragedy as he lost his mother Tracy and sister Scarlett in a car accident in 2006. Fans of Olympic champion Campbell and boxing in general, immediately began handing out sympathy to the boxer after believing what was announced to be true.
