Mexican ready to return from injury
Former world title challenger Alfonso Gomez is to fight
Shawn Porter on the undercard of Robert Guerrero’s interim WBC welterweight
title bout with Selcuk Aydin on July 28 after recovering from a back injury.
The 31 year-old was forced to withdraw from high-profile
bouts with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Jessie Vargas since his last fight against
Saul Alvarez in September 2011 and is now ready to erase the memory of his
second world title defeat.
“The fight with Shawn Porter is on. I am getting ready for
it and believe me I will take the victory because I am going places and I
cannot be derailed,” Gomez told World Boxing News.
Porter, 24, is undefeated in 19 contests since turning pro
on the back of a failed bid to make the 2008 Olympic team, but has taken to the
paid ranks with ease scoring 14 stoppages and steps up in class at the end of
the month against the skilled Mexican.
