Maccarinelli drug test failure, Banbula, Dunstan bans



Welshman career on hold

Rumours that former world champion Enzo Maccarinelli had tested positive for a banned substance have been swirling around boxing for the past month and have now been confirmed.

The 31 year-old, who recently vacated his British cruiserweight title, is facing a ban from the sport just as he may have been on the verge of a possible all-Welsh world title showdown with WBO light-heavyweight king Nathan Cleverly.

The likeable fighter from Swansea had one of the best reputations in the sport and had also been working as a commentator for BoxNation when the first reports filtered through of a problem with his test result.

Journeyman Michael Banbula and former English cruiserweight champion Terry Dunstan have also been named as the latest boxers to be serving suspensions for using banned substance.

WBN Remembers: "Gypsy Boy" Ernie Smith

Jay WBN Editor  (picure by boxrec.com)  After almost a year and a half without one of boxing’s great journeymen, World Boxing News is looking back at the 161-fight career of Worcestershire warrior Ernie Smith, concentrating on his contribution in the ring, rather than the tragic way his life ended out of it. Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds.
