Former world title challenger intent on comeback

Light-middleweight contender Delvin Rodriguez is ready to return to the ring in the coming months following his world title defeat to Austin Trout in June, according to manager AJ Galante who spoke with WBN recently.

The 32 year-old, who gained the WBA opportunity on the back of two solid performances against the now-retired Pawel Wolak, is hoping to get back into contention for another crack at the world crown with a victory over a highly-ranked opponent.

"I am a firm believer in that our loss in June will make Delvin better,” Galante told World Boxing News.

“Delvin is back in the gym and hungrier than ever. He has been through so many ups and downs in his career, but the one constant is that he will never quit.

“He's a throwback fighter and a true warrior and I am working with our promoters at STAR Boxing on the next installment.

“We are all in agreement that we want to get back into the ring as soon as possible and our preference is a top ten guy.

“We believe Delvin deserves to be in there with the elite talents and we don't want any soft fights at all.

“I am not going to wait around for a year for an opportunity. I'd like to get Delvin in the ring two more times by the end of the year if possible," added Galante.

The US-based Dominican took the undefeated Trout the full twelve rounds at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California and could get right back in the mix at 154lbs with another impressive win in the fall.

Smith turned professional at super-featherweight in 1998 at the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, losing a six rounder against Welshman Woody Greenaway.  One month later, Ernie was thrown in with an unknown prospect by the name of Gavin Rees (former world champion and current British Lightweight Champion) who he also took the distance over four rounds. The “Gypsy Boy” then managed to string together a four fight unbeaten run together in early 1999 and ended the year winning five out of his twelve contests, but by this time had already delved into the journeyman pool of boxers with a record of 5-8-1. After settling at the welterweight limit, Ernie gained a su
