Dib: Contact made with Broner, I’m more than happy to tarnish his record

Featherweight champ aims to secure big fights

Billy Dib will keep himself hovering around 126-130lbs whilst the Australian looks to secure high-profile contests against the likes of Chris John and Adrien Broner in the near future.

The 26 year-old IBF featherweight king moves back up to super-featherweight for the first time officially since 2008 against the hard-hitting Juan Antonio Rodriguez in Campsie, Australia and will be aiming to score his 35th professional win from 36 recorded bouts on July 13.

Dib told WBN that he will then contemplate unifying the division or aiming to become a two-weight world champion at the higher weight thereafter.

“To be completely honest with you I'm ready and willing to face any of the other champions,” Dib told World Boxing News.

“My first dream was to win a world title and now my dream is to be a multiple belt holder.

“I'm really comfortable making the weight (126lbs) so I don't actually know how many more times I will be campaigning at featherweight. As long as I can secure some big fights here I'm happy to stay put and defend my title against all comers.”

‘The Kid’ is inevitably being linked to a bout with super-featherweight superstar Adrien Broner since announcing his return to 130lbs and Dib is open to the possibility of a WBO title challenge against ‘The Problem’ in future as he rates the American highly, as most in the fight game do.

“I think Adrian Broner has a fantastic kit of skills,” stated Dib. “I would be more than happy to move up and tarnish his unblemished record. My management have been in touch with GBP and we have showed them interest in taking that fight.

“Right now though, Rodriguez is the most import fight of my career. He is a heavy handed southpaw with a fantastic KO ratio. I’ve worked extremely hard in the gym and come July 13th, I'm going to put on a scintillating display.

“I would like to thank all those who have supported me and believed in me and I wish to dedicate my fight to a friend of mine who passed recently; 17 year old Scott McDonald and to all humans who have been killed innocently. I fight for you.”

Ashley Theophane talks US return, Ricky Burns sparring and future fights

The 31 year-old, who has fought some of the top fighters between 140 and 154lbs, planned to take 18 months out of chasing his world title dream to win a British Lonsdale belt outright and just fell short with points defeat to Hamilton in May after making two defences. Soccer star Tim Cahill’s cousin Jai Opetaia, 16, spars Danny Green

Jay WBN Editor (Picture from The Brisbane Times) Youngster shares ring with IBO champ Jai Opetaia, cousin of Everton Football Club’s star soccer player Tim Cahill, is a sixteen year-old amateur fighter who is deep in preparations for the forthcoming world youth championships.  Recently the youngster was given the opportunity to spar with Australia’s IBO world light-heavyweight champion Danny Green as he prepares to take on Antonio Tarver and gain valuable experience before his trip to Europe. Opetaia, who hails from Watanobbi, has already taken former world champion Anthony Mundine a few rounds in sparring and has added another world renowned boxer to the list in 38 year-old Green.
