English title challenger awaits scan outcome
Manchester fighter Kieran Farrell is staring into the abyss
of a life without being able to fight as doctors await the results of a scan to
assess a bleed on the lightweight contender’s brain.
The 22 year-old was embroiled in a ten-round war with
Anthony Crolla last Friday night, after which the previously unbeaten boxer
collapsed and has been hospital ever since under the supervision of specialists.
“They’ve kept me in to make sure the bleed disperses,”
Farrell told The Manchester Evening News. “It’s dispersing on its own but if it
didn’t then they’d have to operate.
“Even sat in hospital I keep getting upset thinking about
it, whether the Board will let me fight again.
“My biggest hurdle is passing the scan, but at the minute
I’m more focused on getting home, being well and spending time with my family
and my daughter over Christmas.”
Farrell has been uplifted by phone calls from Spencer Oliver
and Michael Watson, as both of their careers were cut short due to injuries
suffered in the ring. The ‘Vicious’ one had been optimistic of resuming boxing
after a recovery period and had even stated his intent of one day claiming a
world title.
The next few days may now determine whether Farrell will
even be able to lace on a pair of gloves professionally again, which would be a
tragedy for the promising fighter and boxing would be at a loss if that were to
be the case.
