Hospitalised boxer won’t give up on dream

Lightweight contender Kieran Farrell is stated his intention to come back stronger after being stretchered from the ring on Friday night following his decision defeat to new English champion Anthony Crolla.

The 22 year-old, who suffered his first loss at the Bowlers Arena in Manchester, has been kept in hospital for a second night for observation, but is in no doubt about continuing his promising boxing career in the future.

“I’d like to thank Dave Coldwell and all his team for putting on a top show,” said Farrell.

“Well done to Anthony Crolla and all the best to him in the future. As a boxing fan, it’s a privilege to be involved in a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate.

“Obviously I am devastated with the result. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and seen what ‘Vicious’ Kieran Farrell is about.

“I am sat in Hope Hospital planning the next mission. I have got a world title to go and win. Viva La Vicious!”

Farrell’s record now stands at 14-1 following the defeat, although the Heywood fighter may be forced to take some time out of boxing to recover from the energy-sapping contest before contemplating his next bout.

It was 1983 and Billy was matched up against Puerto Rican journeyman Luis Resto on the undercard of Roberto Duran v Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden in a ten rounder. Resto wasn’t known for his punching power but Billy took a sustained beating for the full ten rounds, his face, badly damaged and his eyes were almost shut. After the fight, which Resto won on decision, Billy’s father shook Resto’s hand and noticed there wasn’t much padding in his gl...
